November 2016 ACT Newsletter

Hello ACT Alumni,

I hope you are all well. It was wonderful to see some of you at ACO's Education Day on Saturday October 22. We hope you enjoyed it!!

A quick but we hope interesting update for you. We have three important things to share with you and we'd also like some input in a couple areas.

1. November is Adoption Awareness Month

It's November, otherwise known as Adoption Awareness Month around here!!

The ACO is planning a number of events throughout the month. There's info about this on our AAM webpage. Stay tuned to it here:

3Here is our very short (just over a minute) Family Effect video that explains why we do what we do at the ACO:

Watch the video and feel free to pass it along to your network of friends and colleagues. Let's spread the word about how important FAMILY is for our children.

As part of Adoption Awareness month, the ACO is gathering information from pre-adoptive and post-adoptive families about the current system of adoption in Ontario that we want to share with our partners and the Ontario government. The links to the survey are on the AAM webpage noted above. Please feel free to distribute to families you know of.

We are also encouraging families to make an appointment and talk to their local MPP about adoption - telling their story and talking to them about how important it is to find families for kids in care and to support those families on their lifelong journey. They can learn more about how to to do this on our AAM page.

2.  Training & Education Interests & Needs

As you may be aware, we recently held a 1-day ACO Education Day on Saturday October 22 in Brampton. It was very well received by parents and professionals alike. We wanted to reach out to all our ACT alumni and get your feedback on what your training and education interests and needs are going forward. This quick survey asks you why you might not have attended our recent Education Day and to what extent you might be interested in a 2-day conference about adoption & permanency sometime in 2017 or 2018. It should only take you 5 minutes to fill out and we would certainly appreciate your feedback.

For those of you that attended Education Day, you already received a survey about the Day and the idea of a multi-day conference in 2017 or 2108 so you don't have to fill this one out.

We ask that these surveys be completed by Monday November 7th - thank you!!

3. PACT Webpages & Listing of professionals
And finally, we've been working on our PACT webpages. They are much easier to navigate and look pretty good too!! We will be adding much more content over the coming weeks but wanted to give you a preview of our new look. Here's the PACT main page which links to all the others:

One of the areas we are looking at improving is the section called "Find a Professional" on the Parent and Professional pages. This section includes a listing of professionals who have taken the ACT training. Please note we are in the process of updating the list for the professionals that completed ACT over the past few months - our apologies for the delay.
We want to make the listing and the professionals easier to find for families and professionals, and we think it would be useful to show on the listing who among the ACT trained professionals are working as counsellors/therapists/clinicians and have some kind of practice - whether it be private or public - that our adoption and permanency constellation members may be interested in accessing.
We are thinking through how we would indicate those professionals that are therapists - possibly by an asterisk or in some other fashion such as codes for private practice (PP) or public practice (PUB). Please let us know if you would like some kind of notation beside your name indicating that you have a clinical practice, and if so, what kind of notation you think would be helpful.
Please also let us know if you think other indicators of which field(s) you work in would be useful to include on the listing as well - i.e., Child Welfare (CW), Children's Mental Health (CMH), Adoption Practitioner (AP), Legal Profession (LG), Educator (ED), Physician (DR), etc.
We don't propose to list degrees or professional body membership at this juncture but rather leave that up to the professionals to indicate on their website/contact info and for families to inquire about based on their needs. We simply don't have the resources to continually update or verify this information.
Comments on other aspects of the site, the listing or the ACT training generally are always welcome.
That's it for now. If you have any comments or feedback for us, please let us know at
Our best wishes for a great November Adoption Awareness Month!!!

Thank you!

The PACT Team
