What is an ARE?
Adoption Resource Events (ARE) are virtual or in-person events hosted by the Adoption Council of Ontario where adoption professionals from Children’s Aid Societies share the written profiles, videos, and photos of children and youth currently waiting for permanency through adoption. The events occur regionally, provincially, and as part of child or youth targeted events.

Adoption Resource Events (ARE)

Provincials
The Provincial ARE is typically held once or twice a year, in the Spring and/or Fall, and is funded by the Ministry of Children, Community, and Social Services. These events have been held both in-person and virtually (through a secure third-party platform).

Regionals
AdoptOntario hosts Regional AREs that are geographically based and are held a few times a year in various areas across the province (at the request of agencies). Each regional event is tailored to the needs of the children and youth and attendance details are determined by the Children’s Aid Societies participating in the events. Regional AREs operate in the same manner as a Provincial ARE only with a more specific geographical region of focus.

Online / Child & Youth Profile Events
In addition to the Provincial and Regional AREs, AdoptOntario hosts several smaller, targeted virtual Online Adoption Events throughout the year. This will help identify prospective families for children and youth who are in care and whose needs will be met best through nurturing family relationships. You can find a listing of our upcoming Online Adoption Events and Child and Youth Profile Nights here.

What to Expect at an ARE
While adoption professionals presenting children or youth at an ARE typically only consider AdoptReady applicants, pre-adoptive families have access to a number of resources at the events as well.
For example, the Provincial/Regional AREs include a Resource Village that provides adoption and post-adoption information and support. The Resource Village includes a panel of experts and foster/adoptive parents who are ready to share their experiences and knowledge on various needs. In addition, representatives from multiple organizations, including the Adoption Council of Ontario and other community partners, will be available to provide information about adoption and permanency supports for children, youth, and families.
What is the ARE Online Platform, and how does it work?
The ARE Online Platform allows AdoptReady attendees to view profiles, pictures, and videos (if available) of the children and youth being presented at the ARE. The ARE Online Platform is a time-limited feature only offered during AdoptOntario’s adoption events.
Prospective adoptive parents should know that the ARE Online Platform is different from the Waiting Child Listing. The Waiting Child Listing is a year-round virtual resource specific to AdoptOntario recruitment.
Along with providing information about the children and youth being presented, the ARE Online Platform also provides prospective adoptive parents with the opportunity to complete and send an expression of interest form from the comfort of their own home.
If you would like to learn more about a child or youth that you previously viewed on the ARE Online Platform, please speak to your adoption professional directly. Your adoption professional will use their discretion in relaying further information about the child or youth profiled at the ARE.
