Adoption Basics

Who Can Adopt in Ontario?

Adoptive parents can apply as a couple or as a single person. Applicants can have intersecting identity characteristics such as different races, ethnicities, abilities, languages, religions, gender identities and expressions and sexual orientations.

To be eligible to adopt you must be:

1. Willing to make a life-long commitment to a child.
2. 18 or older.
3. A resident of Ontario.
4. If you have a spouse or common-law partner, you must submit an adoption application together.
5. Able to provide a home that meets basic safety requirements.

There are no income requirements to adopt a child.
